The Lake
[edit]Cool little article. I am curious as to whether "A crater lake once filled much of the caldera" refers to like 50 years ago or like 50 million years ago. Perhaps that could be elaborated on, at least in general terms? - House of Scandal (talk) 14:11, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hundreds of years ago. Yes, the article could be clearer; it was the 2400-year-ago eruption that created the caldera (after which it filled with water and then breached the caldera rim draining most the lake.) TaigaBridge (talk) 22:17, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Just to wonder ...

[edit]Although I helped change some bits (e.g. the eruption has ended), I still need help for the part on airflights. Guanlongwucaii (talk) 09:24, 19 May 2009 (UTC)Guanlongwucaii

- I randomly googled three phrases and only turned up Wikipedia mirrors. Earwig's tool shows no sign of copyright violation.
- Spotchecks:
- "The flows on Umnak form two facies, one stratified and one massive, depending on local topographic conditions" is sourced to p. 508 which supports the information
- "The tremor lasted for about 12 hours, the eruption itself continued for five weeks" is sourced to this source p. 2 which supports the information.
- "Okmok is one of the most active calderas in North America" is source to this source p. 2 which supports the information
- General:
- A check for duplicate links should be done - I see Aleutians repeated often, as well as mudflows and some others.
- Seems like someone already got them. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 17:36, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- American subject, American spelling - "meters" not "metres" - I changed some of the conversion templates, but they all should be fixed.

- Geography:
- "120 kilometres (75 mi) from Okmok is[9] Dutch Harbor on" per MOS:NUMNOTES we don't start sentences with figures.
- Rearranged. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 17:36, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- "mountain by Dunn 1908" do you mean "mountain by Dunn in 1908"? And who is Dunn?
- Source cites him/her as a source but doesn't actually say who that is, alas. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 17:36, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

- Geology:
- "Umnak island is on Cretaceous seafloor" shouldn't there be an "a" between "on" and "Cretaceous"?
- I don't think that's necessary? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 17:36, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

- Climate:
- "The Aleutian Islands have a cloudy and rainy weather" either delete the "a" or change "weather to "climate"
- Removed the "a". Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 17:36, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- "Animals include red foxes, reindeer and numerous birds populate the island" should be either "Animals include red foxes, reindeer and numerous birds" or "Animals including red foxes, reindeer and numerous birds populate the island"

- 1817 AD:
- "and a maar" link? Or have we linked earlier?
- Aye, that's linked earlier. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 17:36, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- "and a maar" link? Or have we linked earlier?
- Scientific importance:
- "until the 1997 eruption renewed scientific attention,[219] which is now one of the best studied Aleutian volcanoes" the second phrase makes no sense as "which" seems to refer to the either eruption or attention. I suspect you mean "until the 1997 eruption renewed scientific attention,[219] which made Okmok one of the best studied Aleutian volcanoes"?
- I've put the article on hold for seven days to allow folks to address the issues I've brought up. Feel free to contact me on my talk page, or here with any concerns, and let me know one of those places when the issues have been addressed. If I may suggest that you strike out, check mark, or otherwise mark the items I've detailed, that will make it possible for me to see what's been addressed, and you can keep track of what's been done and what still needs to be worked on. - Substantial interesting article, GA on its way to FA it seems, offline and subscription sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious. The hook works for me. The image is licensed and attention-grabbing ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:59, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
