Every bio article under WP:PW is as biased toward WWF/WWE as possible, or so it seems just from reading them. In Johnson's case, his first major career break came in Memphis in 1976, where he was brought in, billed as a boxer and not a wrestler, to challenge Jerry Lawler. That's conspicuously missing from the article, but then so are a lot of other such pertinent facts all over Wikipedia.RadioKAOS (talk) 07:26, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fan article

The entry reads like a fan article. E.g. "While he initially resisted his son's entry into the business because he knew it was extremely difficult, he agreed to train his son on the condition that he would not go easy on him." I don't have any scholarly information to offer for this article, but I grew up in Memphis and Rocky Johnson was every schoolboy's hero - black and white. He was a classic "face" (that's what professional wrestlers call the good guys) who was feared by many "heels" (i.e., the villains). Many times some of the "heels" would be causing havoc in the ring. Rocky Johnson would come out, and the bad guys would leave in a hurry. Yes, I know it was all an act, but it was a real crowd-pleaser!97.73.64.150 (talk) 00:49, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Since you mention Memphis, his first real break in the business came in Memphis in 1976. He was brought in, billed as a boxer (information is fuzzy, but I believe he did this same routine in a number of territories back then) to face Jerry Lawler. Lawler, at the time, was a cocky young heel, who had feuded at length with Jackie Fargo. In effect, Fargo was passing the torch to Lawler. Lawler had also started receiving title shots around this time against both Jack Brisco and Terry Funk. Basically, Lawler was just starting to reach the level of fame and legend he has enjoyed in recent history, and was able to give "the rub" to other wrestlers he worked with, including Johnson, despite Johnson actually being a number of years older. Since not only PW articles on Wikipedia, but the source material used to build them, shows a blatant pro-WWE and anti-history bias, I just thought I might throw this out. American vs. Canadian

best wrestler in that time. The opening of the page calls Rocky Johnson an "American" professional wrestler, however there doesn't seem to be anything in the article to support this claim. He was born and raised in Nova Scotia, moved to Toronto at 16, and didn't begin his professional career until the "mid-1960s", at which point he likely began to work in America and may have moved there or pursued American citizenship, but none of that is listed in the article. The only thing in the article at all about his citizenship or current status us that he resides in Florida (Personal life section and the sidebox thing), which is all fine and good, but does not, on its own, make him American. I rarely contribute to Wikipedia much, so I don't know if there's a standard on things like this, but I would like to think that the article is logical, makes sense, and supports itself. There's nothing in the article that says he's American other than an unsupported word in the opening, whereas there is evidence to suggest he is Canadian (being born in Canada). I'm not going to make a change (that whole "rarely contributes" thing), but I would suggest some change does need to be made.

  • Obviously the biggest thing would simply be a source that confirms he is American and not Canadian, and having that cited (there is a citation on the sentence, but I'm guessing that has to do with who his son is, not his nationality).
  • Without that, perhaps saying he is a "Canadian-born American professional wrestler" (presuming that is indeed correct) is in order? I have seen that in other articles.
  • Or just go with what is supported currently by the article—which is that he is Canadian.

A Recent deaths nomination

One thing a nom sometimes does is to get a team of really good editors to come in and improve a page. Because of the timeliness of Recent death nominations they have to come fairly soon. The page should get many editors adding to it in any case, as the news of his passing spreads, and his obituaries will provide further sourced information.
