I have just removed a paragraph of text with photo about Gertrude Middleton as it was not relevant to the history section. Former students, with their own articles, can be added to the list in the Former members section, but Gertrude Middleton does not have her own article. Cassidy McGurk, the people section is a selection of names added by Wikipedia editors and no one has added Dugdale. There is a longer list at List of St Anne's College, Oxford people and further names in Category:Alumni of St Anne's College, Oxford. TSventon (talk) 19:52, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Victoria County History

Srbernadette, a reference to the Victoria County History article at https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/oxon/vol3/pp351-353 has just been added. I can't find the quoted text Society of Home-Students working with the Lady Margaret Hall Settlement and the Principal of the Society from 1940 to 1953 (Eleanor Plumer) had previously been Warden of the Mary Ward Settlement (1923-1927) in the article, do you have the correct source and the full sentence? Dear Michael,

Thank you for your enquiry, which I can pick up now that I’m back from leave.

I would say it’s very likely that that students from the Oxford Society of Home-Students were working with or connected with the Women's University Settlement (later Blackfriars Settlement) from 1903.

However, I haven’t been able to locate anything the archive that categorically confirms this. In our published history of St Anne’s there are references to the Society of Home-Students working with the Lady Margaret Hall Settlement and the Principal of the Society from 1940 to 1953 (Eleanor Plumer) had previously been Warden of the Mary Ward Settlement (1923-1927).

As you say, there definitely seemed to be strong connections between the Oxford women’s colleges and the London Settlements.

It looks like the records of the Blackfriars Settlement are now held as part of the Women’s Library at the London School of Economics: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/6847656d-c397-4970-9af2-a675320a0557

It’s possible they may be able to confirm the names of those who worked or volunteered there.

Srbernadette, thank you, I have updated the reference accordingly. I think "our published history of St Anne’s" is probably

Marjorie Reeves, St Anne's College, Oxford: An Informal History (Oxford: St Anne's College, 1979),

but there is another possibility at https://oac.web.ox.ac.uk/st-annes-college.

I still don't think the Middleton related material is important enough to the history of the college to be included in the history section. TSventon (talk) 22:06, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
