Comment on my talk page

[edit]

I have put a general comment on year layout on my talk page, particularly on the way year by topic is dealt with. There are three different variants and I would like agreement to standardise. This would involve deleting the year by topic from the paragraph list on this page but keeping the box at the topBozMo(talk)

Death of priest

[edit]

Its important to include, killed by kgb on 11/1/1947! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kremliner (talkcontribs) 00:30, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Only if you tell us the priest's name and place of death, along with the reason his death was important. Qzm (talk) 02:39, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a couple of paragraphs, links, references to the UK's big freeze, which is still talked about to this day. But perhaps it needs a page of its own. As per Winter of 1962–1963 in the United Kingdom which was colder but with less snowfall. Or as per North American blizzard of 1947.

I'm not sure what is the right way to go about this - what is the preferred layout, where to get the details.--Robert EA Harvey (talk) 19:22, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Type 1

[edit]

This page says the first Type 1 arrived 25 Feb. This page says it was 19 January. Which is it? TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 18:32, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Collage

[edit]

It's time for a collage for the year 1947... What events should be placed? Here are my suggestions:

  • March 12 – The Cold War begins: The Truman Doctrine is proclaimed, to help stem the spread of Communism
  • The Indian Independence Act of 1947 - The act created two new independent dominions; India and Pakistan.
  • February 28 Massacre: Anti-government uprising in Taiwan is violently put down by Chiang Kai-shek and his Kuomintang-led Republic of China government with the loss of 18,000-28,000 lives. Marks the beginning of the White Terror.
  • May 3 Japan's post-war constitution goes into effect, granting universal suffrage, stripping Emperor Hirohito of all but symbolic power and outlawing Japan's right to make war
  • Jun 5 US Secretary of State George Marshall outlines the "Marshall Plan" to rebuild Western Europe

What else do you guys have? Here are a bunch of events: https://www.onthisday.com/events/date/1947 Setarip (talk) 16:29, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

1947 was the year we got flying saucers in mainstream culture, perhaps File:Rhodes UFO photos.png or File:Supposed UFO, Passaic, New Jersey (cropped).jpg Feoffer (talk) 00:44, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"1947 was the year we got flying saucers in mainstream culture" If you are referring to the 1947 flying disc craze, all the reports were from the United States. Single-country event. Dimadick (talk) 14:55, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Single-country event Not at all! Within the summer / during the craze, the "Flying disc" reports spread to Mexico, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and I'm pretty sure UK (though the article should reflect that, it currently doesn't). But eventually, the flying disc/saucer/ufo/uap reports show up everywhere. To use the meme-virus analogy, it's like saying COVID-19 was a single-country event in 2019 -- it was definitely China-centric in 2019 but it had spread outside China's borders, but it quickly spread everywhere. (again, bad analogy because folklore is harmless and most viruses we know about are deadly). Feoffer (talk) 11:58, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the 1947–1948 civil war in Mandatory Palestine and Malagasy Uprising were also very important. Nagae Iku (talk) 12:46, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Should we include the 1947 Jammu massacres / Indo-Pakistani war of 1947–1948 ? I feel like those two are also pretty significant. Setarip (talk) 11:20, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
