Michael Austin is a graduate student in Philosophy at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His interests largely fit under the banner of “the metaphysics of psychoanalysis,” including the historical precedents (Schelling, Schopenhauer, etc), the psychoanalytic theorists themselves (Freud, Jung, Lacan), and the metaphysical offspring of this lineage (Deleuze, Badiou, Zizek, etc). Besides psychoanalysis, his philosophical roots can be located in the intersecting systems of vitalists (Spinoza, Nietzsche, Bergson). More broadly, he is also interested in speculative realism.

His current research involves an attempt to understand the relation between vitalism and psychoanalysis, focusing on the question of Lacanian ontology, and how it relates to the systems of Deleuze, Badiou, and Zizek.

He serves as an editor for the journal Analecta Hermeneutica and is currently working on the first English translation of F.W.J. Schelling’s Aphorisms For a Philosophy of Nature (1805-1806), as well as a book tentatively titled Death Drive: Between Chaos and Repetition.
