Under the section "==Early life==", the opening sentence reads "Jeter was born on June 26, 1974, in Pequannock Township, New Jersey, the son of accountant Dorothy (née Connors) and substance abuse counselor Sanderson Charles Jeter." Can you please add "Derek Sanderson" to open the sentence? It should read "Derek Sanderson Jeter was born on June 26, 1974, in Pequannock Township, New Jersey, the son of accountant Dorothy (née Connors) and substance abuse counselor Sanderson Charles Jeter." 2603:8000:8500:38F2:C5C1:BEEE:B0C9:A94 (talk) 20:25, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I see, the "original research" tag was placed last month. One source is used to cite original research. Cleanup is done to address this, but the tag is still in place. Will add the article in WP:FARGIVEN soon. George Ho (talk) 23:06, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, FA nominator here. I was unaware of an original research tag being placed on the page until I saw your post on my watchlist. Give me a few days to address this. Left guide, is there anything outside of the use of B-Ref that is of concern? – Muboshgu (talk) 23:52, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Muboshgu: Thanks for flagging, Baseball-Reference was the main one I spotted some OR and all of those instances should be reviewed (stats databases have a tendency to be used for OR since they don't produce any secondary prose). Ultimately, it would probably help for all of the article's sources to be checked against the text since the article was promoted to FA 12 years ago, but that's not as urgent. Another big concern is that WP:NYPOST is cited about a dozen times. Left guide (talk) 00:23, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response. B-Ref provides accurate statistics and some other information (awards and transactions mostly), but can be misused easily. I believe NY Post was cited before it was downgraded at RSP. I argue though that their sports coverage is pretty good. I would never cite them for US politics. I shall go over this page in the next few days. – Muboshgu (talk) 00:26, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi George Ho and Left guide. I did a run through of the citations to Jeter's B-Ref page. Here is my assessment of them, please let me know if you agree or disagree:
He is the Yankees' all-time career leader in hits (3,465), doubles (544), games played (2,747), stolen bases (358), times on base (4,716), plate appearances (12,602) and at bats (11,195).[1]
Statistics are accurate, but his B-Ref page does not say he is the Yankees all-time leader in them. I will supplement this citation or replace it.
Jeter batted .250[1]
Accurate and included in the B-Ref page. I'll switch the citation to this secondary source.
Jeter batted .291, with 10 home runs, 70 RBIs, 116 runs, and 190 hits.[1]
Accurate, sourced by B-Ref. I can supplement with this source.
That year, Jeter was selected for his first All-Star Game. In the regular season, he batted .324 with a league-leading 127 runs, 19 home runs, and 84 RBIs,[1]
Accurate, sourced by B-ref. I'll add this source to beef it up.
Jeter led the AL in hits that season with 219, while finishing second in the league in batting average (.349) and runs scored (134), appearing in his second All-Star game that year.[1] His season totals in batting average, runs, hits, runs batted in, doubles (37), triples (9), home runs (24), SLG (.552), and OBP (.438) are all personal bests.[1] Jeter also drove in 102 runs.[1] In the postseason, Jeter batted .455 in the ALDS, .350 in the ALCS, and .353 in the World Series,[1]
I lumped all of these citations together because they are a mess and I will fix this paragraph. B-Ref does support all of this information, though.
Jeter batted a team-best .339 in the 2000 regular season and added 15 home runs, 73 RBIs, 119 runs scored, and 22 stolen bases.[1][55]
Accurate details, sourced by B-Ref and [55]
During the postseason, he batted only .211 in the Division Series but rebounded to hit .318 in the Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners, and .409 in the World Series against the New York Mets.[1]
B-Ref does include this information, but I can find a secondary source on his postseason
In 2001, Jeter batted .311 with 21 home runs, 74 RBIs, 110 runs scored, and 27 stolen bases, making his fourth All-Star appearance.[1]
Can be better written and sourced, I will find one for this.
Jeter batted .297, with 18 home runs, 75 RBIs, 124 runs scored, 191 hits, and a career-best 32 stolen bases during the 2002 regular season. He led the majors in stolen base percentage (91.4%), getting caught only three times. He made his fifth All-Star appearance.[1]
Again, sourced to B-Ref, but secondary sourcing such as this can improve this sentence.
Jeter made the All-Star team and finished the season with a .292 average; 23 home runs, the second-most of his career; 78 RBIs; 111 runs scored; and a career-best 44 doubles, which broke the Yankee single-season record for doubles by a shortstop, besting Tony Kubek's 38 in 1961.[1][76]
Sourced, I believe. I can see if I can find that Courant article in Newspapers.com. I think it covers the Kubek part.
Jeter finished the season second in the AL in both batting average (.343) and runs scored (118), third in hits (214), and fourth in OBP (.417), earning his seventh All-Star selection.[1][88][89]
Everything is cited
He was selected for his eighth All-Star appearance.[1]
B-Ref does prove that, but a secondary source would be better.
Jeter's slugging percentage (SLG) dropped to .410 in the 2008 season, his lowest mark since 1997.[1]
B-Ref does show this
He finished the season with a .300 batting average.[1]
B-Ref shows this
Jeter batted .334, third-best in the AL, with a .406 OBP, an .871 OPS, 18 home runs, 66 RBIs, 30 stolen bases in 35 attempts, 107 runs scored, 72 walks, and 212 hits (second in MLB).[1]
B-Ref shows this
In the 2009 postseason, Jeter batted .355, including .407 in the 2009 World Series,[1]
I can probably find better sourcing for Jeter in the 2009 postseason
Jeter finished the year with a .297 batting average, six home runs, 61 runs batted in, 84 runs, and 16 stolen bases.[1]
Sourced by B-Ref
For his career, he averaged 204 hits, 113 runs scored and 21 stolen bases per 162 games.[1]
@Muboshgu: Very good work, thanks. I also appreciate the efforts to shore up information with secondary sources to better establish due weight. Don't have the time to review everything like you did, but I trust your assessment. Feel free to remove the OR tag anytime without asking me if you deem it no longer necessary. Left guide (talk) 17:39, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Besides the OR tag still intact, I see just two images and a table at the Awards section, but I dunno whether that's okay or not. Other than those, I may have overlooked something; the rest of the article seems to have almost no major apparent issues unless his recent commercial appearances, like a few Capital One spots, are deemed necessary for inclusion. George Ho (talk) 22:40, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, I forgot to finish this. I'll blame the 2024 World Series and presidential election for altering my focus. I got through about half of the changes I need to make, I think. I'll finish it off during the Thanksgiving holiday. Capital One commercials can be a sentence. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:24, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can we add an image of Jeter's jump throw in Game 1 of the 1998 ALCS
